5 Axis Milling: Five axis (5-axis) milling refers to the machining of a part whereas the part geometry is typically complex and requires the machine tool to position and articulate the cutting tool along 5 axes of motion vs. the more common 3 axes (X, Y, Z) of motion. The CNC machine tools used in this process are called 5-axis machines or 5-axis machining centers. Five axis machining is most commonly used in the aerospace industry to machine airframe components that have draft surfaces, turbine engine components and impellers. Five axis machines can also increase efficiency on prismatic parts by allowing multiple sides of a part to be machined in a single setup.
